Accessories

The Taber® Linear Abraser can be modified from a wear tester to other testers by changing the Attachment.

Multi-Mar Attachment
Taber’s Multi-Mar Attachment enables you to interchange different mar and scratch tools using one attachment. Use this tool with the Linear Abraser to evaluate coating resistance to scratch, mar and scrape per ASTM D2197. Note, due to the load limit of the Linear Abraser, the maximum recommended weight for testing is 2400 grams. A common reference to this type of test is the “paperclip mar test” or “dime scrape test”.

Each Multi-Mar Attachment includes a loop stylus, which is a 1/16-inch diameter rod, bent into a “U” shape with and outside radius of 0.128 inches and hardened to Rockwell HRC 56 to 58. The stylus is chrome plated with a surface finish of 8RMS. The maximum intended load on this stylus is 2500 grams. Optional tools that may be used with this attachment include a needle stylus, Hoffman stylus, coin and GEM #1 paperclip.

The needle stylus is made from the same material as the loop stylus, and has a 1mm diameter tip. This tip should not be loaded in excess of 2500 grams. The Hoffman stylus has a contact arc of 0.275 inches.

Scratch Kit
The Scratch Kit allows you to perform single or multiple pass scratch testing. Included are a 7x measuring magnifier, the attachment, and two conical diamond tools (model 139-55 with 90°, 3 mil radius point and model 139-56 with 90°, 3.5 mil radius point).

Scratch / Mar Tools - Conduct single or multiple pass scratching using a spherical tip. Available in 1mm or 7mm diameters, these tips screw directly to the bottom of the standard spline shaft.

Universal Kit (98g) [part# 130572]
Perform "real-world" testing by attaching your own abradant, or one of ours. The Universal Kit is ideal for testing flat on flat surfaces.

Cable / Wire Scrape Abrasion Kit [part# 133060]
This attachment is designed to abrade or scrape the surface of wire insulation in both directions along the longitudinal axis of the test sample. A 0.25mm or 0.45mm diameter needle is used to scrape the wire at a specified load and speed. When used in conjunction with the Remote Start / Stop Kit (part# 132652), the Linear Abraser 5750 will automatically shut-off when the needle abrades through the wire’s protective coating and makes contact with the conductor.

Precision Knuckle Attachment (135g) [part# 132735] Perform "real-world" testing by attaching virtually anything to this accessory. To secure the item, a threaded stud and nut are integrated. In addition, the item can be adjusted 180°.

Crock Meter Kit (166g) [part# 130570]
The Crock Meter Kit is typically used to evaluate color fastness (transfer) on textile products. The kit includes a 0.625" acrylic finger, clamp ring and package of crocking cloths.

Wearaser® Collet Kit [part# 130852]
This attachment is used for abrasion testing. The standard Wearaser Collet Kit accepts the ¼" Wearaser. For the 1/2" Wearaser, use the Jumbo Wearaser Collet Kit.

  • Wearaser Collet Kit, Stainless Steel (98g) [part# 130852]
  • Wearaser Collet Kit, Aluminum (28g) [part# 131852]
  • Wearaser Collet Kit, Plastic (16g) [part# 131852-1]
  • Jumbo Wearaser Collet Kit, Aluminum (43g) [part# 131862]

Scuffing Kit [part# 133042]
Simulate scuffing damage generated during material handling or when an object is dragged across a material surface. The holder positions an S-20-4 tungsten carbide tool at a shallow angle, such that the radius tip (R25) can be pulled across the sample surface.

A critical aspect in testing with the Taber Linear Abraser is holding the specimen in place during the test. We offer Specimen Tables to meet most any testing need.

Universal Specimen Table [part# 131734]
This versatile and stable mounting system will enable you to test specimens of all shapes and sizes. Incorporating PanaVise® work holding solutions, the system is attached to the Linear Abraser to ensure a stable test platform. A low-profile mount includes the patented “split ball” design, which allows the vise head to be tilted, turned or rotated for positioning. Three interchangeable vise heads are provided, to help you work more efficiently.

Vise Head – Nylon jaws offer “gentle holding power” and open 2.25” (57.1 mm).

Wide Jaw Vise – Ribbed, neoprene jaw pads
provide a sure grip on larger items. Reverse the
pads, and the wide “V” holds delicate cylindrical objects. Jaws open 6” (152.4 mm).

Flat Table (Fixturing Head) – This head is a flat surface, 5.375” (136.5 mm) in diameter. Six slots and six ¼” holes, permit specimens to be attached easily.

If you prefer clamping the vise to a table, an optional Bench Clamp Base Mount is available.

Weight Discs
The standard minimum load for the Linear Abraser is 350g. Additional weight discs can be purchased to increase the load to a maximum of 2,100g.

  10g weight disc [part#132716]
  20g weight disc [part#132717]
  50g weight disc [part#131548]
  75g weight disc [part# 131611]
100g weight disc [part# 131612]
150g weight disc [part# 131373]
250g weight disc [part# 130285]

Precision Weight Kit
For small weight adjustments, less than 10 grams, Taber offers two precision weight kits. The difference between the two is how they attach to the instrument and if it will be used with or without the weight holder.

Mount directly to spline shaft (weight holder is not used) [part# 132740]
Mount to weight holder (35g minimum) [part# 132710]

Spline Shafts
The standard 10mm diameter spline shaft [part# 132190] is 300mm in length and has a maximum load of 2,100g.

If your testing requires a lighter load, our 150mm length aluminum spline shaft kit [part# 132280] is available. Recommended accessories include the Aluminum Wearaser™ Collet Kit or Aluminum Scratch Kit.

Accessory Lamp – This flexible, gooseneck lamp plugs directly into the Linear Abraser 5750 housing. A halogen bulb can be positioned such that it illuminates the wear path.

Remote Start / Stop Kit [part# 132652]
A cable assembly connects from the specimen under test to the model 5750 Linear Abraser to form an electrical circuit. When circuit continuity is broken (via abrasion or scrape tests), the instrument is automatically stopped allowing you to capture the exact number of cycles to failure.
